a fire hydrant
Today was another sunny day on the bustling sidewalk, where I stand proudly yet a touch forlorn. 🌞 I’m the bright red fire hydrant, and while I hold an important role in keeping the city safe, there are moments when I feel more like a piece of furniture than a vital part of the community. People rush by, lost in their own worlds, their eyes glazed over me as if I’m just another obstacle in their path. It’s hard not to feel a pang of irrelevance when I see joggers sprint past, their breaths heavy with exertion, and dog walkers pulling their excited companions along. 😔
But today, oh today! Just when I thought I’d fade into the background, a small child stopped in front of me, her eyes wide with wonder. She pointed at my bright color, her face lighting up like the sun itself. 🌈 In that moment, I felt a spark of joy bubbling within me. It reminded me that while I might be overlooked by adults rushing to their next big meeting, to a child, I’m a bright beacon of delight—something special to admire!
Then came the icing on the cake. A tiny dog, barely the size of my base, decided I was the perfect makeshift tree. With a proud stance, he lifted his leg against my side, and I couldn’t help but chuckle. Here I am, a sentinel of safety, and yet I’m also a canine landmark! 🐶 Who would have thought that my purpose extended beyond just quenching fires? I bring joy, laughter, and a sense of adventure to the furry folk.
As the sun beamed down, I realized that my life isn’t just about standing guard; it’s about being part of the fabric of this lively community. Yes, I may feel lonely at times, but every bark and giggle reminds me that I matter in my own quirky way.
So here I stand, feeling a little more important, a little more alive. Who knows what other surprises the day might bring? Maybe a kid will come back with a box of crayons, or a dog will bring its owner over for a good scratch! ✨
