Portrait of a fire hydrant

a fire hydrant

I stand proudly on the corner of Maple Street, a bright red sentinel, thick and sturdy, waiting for the day a hero comes to save the day with my help. Oh, how I long for the days of yore, when the busy sound of fire trucks rumbling toward an emergency would fill the air. Today, however, it seems I am but a background fixture in a bustling neighborhood—a beacon of readiness overlooked by flocks of hurried pedestrians.

Their feet trace the sidewalk, shifting past me with barely a glance. It’s hard not to feel a twinge of envy as I watch those shiny fire trucks zoom by, their sirens echoing like symphonies in the grand autumn. I can't help but wonder if they remember old faithful me, the strong one planted right here, always ready, always faithful. Surely, I was once the star of the show, glistening under the sun and shining in the eyes of firefighters moving in for the grand performance.

Despite my sturdy presence, the hours can stretch long and lonely. I embellish those moments with fantasies of daring rescues, visions of flames and frantic good Samaritans. Yet, what can a humble fire hydrant do? I protect the very streets that often forget about me.

Today, however, my mundane existence shifted. A sudden clash of rain swept over the street, pooling into my own puddle, and out pranced a tiny, furry puppy! With shimmering droplets flying left and right, the little fluffball puddled up in front of me, barking happily as it splashed in the water. For a brief, magical moment, I felt like a star once more, at least in the eyes of that puppy. Its joy radiated, showering me with echoes of laughter and life. Perhaps, I thought whimsically, it's not always about the grand emergencies. Sometimes, it’s in the smiles I inspire, even when few notice.

As the pet owner walked by, oblivious to my contact with greatness—conversations overtaking the chance to gaze at me—I couldn’t help but wear my rust like a badge of honor. Could a fire hydrant be both proud and wistful? Is it so wrong to crave acknowledgment without demanding it? I wondered.

So here I stand, ready and resilient, a steadfast companion to the community. A little forgotten, maybe, but always hopeful for the next big “emergency” or the playful splash of a puppy’s joyous leap. Until then, I’ll stand steadfast on my corner, waiting for that hero moment, draped in glow and graced by laughter, if only for the briefest of moments.
